The tribal people are scattered all over the world except the European continent. The largest concentration is found in the African continent and the second largest concentration is in India. Tribal people with a population of 6.2 per cent constitute a significant segment of India's vast population. There are about 613 tribes inhabited all over India. There are nine states with more than one million scheduled tribe population in each. There are five states and Union territories where scheduled tribes are in majority. There is almost a continuous belt of tribal preponderance starting from Thane district of Maharashtra to Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland and even beyound upto the pacific ocean.
