Description |
The genetic base of bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L. em. Thell, 2n=6x=42, AABBDD) has shrunk drastically in the recent years, primarily due to the replacement of highly variable land-races in many parts of the world by high-yielding pure-line varieties. This has led the breeders to investigate the possibility of utilizing the genetic variation present in the wild relatives (Feldman and Sears 1981). Bread wheat is blessed with a large assortment of relatives, diverse in phenotype and adaptation. Of these, rye (Secale cereale L., 2n=2x=14, RR) is particularly important because of some economically valuable characters, which can be incorporated into bread wheat. The addition of complete genome of rye into durum wheat (Triticum turgidum conv. durum, 2n=4x=28, AABB) and bread wheat leads to the production of hexaploid triticale (8x) triticale(X Triticosecale Wittmach, 2n=6x=42, AABBRR) and octoploid (8x) triticale (X Triticosecale Wittmack, 2n=8x=56, AABBLDRR), respectively.
