Rice (Oryza sativa L) is the staple food grain for nearly half of the world's population. "Rice is life", the theme of International Year of Rice, 2004 reflects the importance of rice that holds the key to our country's ability to produce enough food for our people. Rice being climatically most adaptable cereal, various types of land management systems for rice cultivation exist in India. It is cultivated in an area of 44.62 million hectares with annual production of 93.08 million metric tones (Mishra, 2002).
