Description Rice and wheat, among the cereals, are the world's most important food crops which provide an estimated 60 per cent of the world's-human-enerqy. The target of production of rice and wheat by 2000 AD has been fixed at 97.00 and 63.81 million tonnes, respectively while production of respective crops has reached only 74.05 and 49.65 million tonnes during 1989-90 (Anonymous, 1991). Thus, the production of rice and wheat has to be increased by 60 and 40 per cent, respectively to achieve the targets. The average yield of rice and wheat was 1688 kg ha-1 and 2241 kg ha-1 , respectively during 1988-89. Similarly, the average yield of pulses and oilseeds is stagnant around 543 and 729 kg ha-1 (Annonymous, 1991).
