Description |
Garden pea (Pisum sativum L) belonging to family leguminosae, is an important cool season vegetable crop grown throughout the country. It is of Mediterranean origin and the Near East and Ethiopia are considered as secondary habitats (Blixt, 1970). It is grown as a winter vegetable in northern Indian plains and foothills and as a summer crop in the hills. The produce of hills is high priced for its characteristic flavour, sweetness, tenderness and attractive pods. Garden pea is not only rich in protein (22.9% on dry weight basis and 6.2% on fresh weight basis) but also has appreciable amount of sugars, vitamins and minerals (Hulse, 1994).
