Description |
Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moenchis) an important malvaceous warm season vegetable (Choudhary, 1979) and is a native of Ethiopia (Vavilov, 1951). But now it is believed to be orginated in Hindustan Centre chiefly India (Zeven and Zhukovskyi, 1975). Though, it is a tropical and sub-tropical region crop, it is also grown in low and mid hills of Himachal Pradesh. It is grown for its tender green fruits which are used as Vegetable. On an average okra yields 100-120 q/ha of fruits and its seed yield is 10-12q/ha (Anonymous, 1989). Its other uses are in the sugar industry and its seeds after being roasted and ground are used as a substitute for coffee in Turkey (Chauhan, 1972; Mehta,1959). Okra also finds use in medicines (Nadkarni, 1972) being a rich source of vitamins (A,B,C) and minerals (Fe, Ca, P).
