Lentil (Lens culinaris Medik) 2n = 14, is recognized as a valuable pulse and is grown on about 2.5 million hectares in the world mainly in the semi-arid regions of Middle East, Northern Africa, Central and Western Asia, Northern and South America. The countries of Indian subcontinent (India, Pakistan and Bangladesh) alone produce about 38% of the world production and among them India is the largest producer (500 x 103 metric tonnes), which is about 5% of its total pulse production (Salunkhe et al.,1985).
