Description |
Genetic variation is the fundamental requirement for the maintenance and long term stability of forest ecosystems, since the amount and pattern of genetic variation determine the ability of forest tree species to adapt to the variability of environmental conditions. Forest tree species often show large intra-specific variation occurmg within and between populations in the species' natural range of distribution. High levels of variation may reflect the countervailing effects of such factors as mating preferences and selection effects. The structure of genetic variation in forest trees is generally not in stable equilibrium and its dynamism may be an important feature of ecosystem evolution. Some continuous change may be required to maintain productivity and continuity = of a forest ecosystem.
