Description |
As most cut flowers have a limited vase life they have traditionally been cultivated close to marketing centers, so that the consumer might enjoy maximum utilization of the flowers. Pre-harvest factors like, genetic constitution, climatic conditions and management practices influence the post harvest quality and longevity, but the cut flowers are metabolically active even after harvest, thereby, using the stored food which results in the reduction of their vase life. Another reason for the deterioration of cut flowers is the production of ethylene, a naturally occurring plant hormone, which shortens the longevity of cut flowers.
