Description |
Among all plant families, the Meliaceae are considered more useful to human beings, chiefly for their high quality timbers and for the ease with which they can be grown in plantations. Toona ciliata being one of the foremost and fast growing species in the family can also be an alternative to the problem of timber, fuelwood and fodder. Along with other best known examples in the international timber trade viz., American or true mahogany (Swietenia spp.); African mahogany (Khaya spp.); Sapele or Utile (Entandrophragma spp.); American cedar (Cedrela spp.); Chickrassy or Chittagong wood (Chukrasia spp.); Toona spp., are commonly called as Burma cedar, Indian toon or Australian red cedar. The Meliaceae are in fact the backbone of the forest industry of many countries (Bahadur, 1988).
