Description Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is one of the major food legumes produced throughout the world and its production is very important in North, Central and South America, Eastern Africa, Eastern Asia and South Eastern Europe (Mavric & Vozlic, 2004). Worldwide, common bean is cultivated in an area of about 26,050 thousand hectares with an annual production of 18,825/1000 metric tonnes (FAO, 2004) whereas, in India cultivated in an area of about 9.0 milllion hectare with an annual production of 290/1000 metric tonnes (FAO, 2004). Being a highly nutritious crop, it is an excellent source of proteins, vitamins and minerals particularly calcium, phosphorus, iron and zinc (Broughton et al., 2003).
