Description |
Apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) is the most important fruit of the temperate region of the world. In India, its cultivation has increased tremendously in the past few decades and it is now being extensively grown in parts of Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir and Kumaon hills of Uttar Pradesh. Efforts are being made to extend its cultivation to north-eastern hills of the country comprising the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Sikkim. The total area under this fruit is 0.178 million hectares with 1.15 million tonnes production which is around 4-5 per cent of the total fruit production of the country (Chadha, 1990).
