Description |
Forests are indispensable for the very existence of life on this planet as they are a vital component in the ecosystem. Only about 22 per cent of our total land area is under forest and is continuously dwindling due to progressive deforestation owing to population pressure for meeting the multifarious needs of the people. Vora (1989) reported that the rate of depletion of India's 'good forest' (with a cover of at least 40%) was around 1.5 m ha during the period 1973- 75 and 1980-82, and must be above this level today, considering the fact that the demand for forest based products has increased tremendously in last few years.
