Description |
Rice (Oryza sativa L.) 1s one of the staple cereal crops of the yor1d both in terms of area (148.4 m ha) and production (519.9 million tonnes rough rice, Anonymous, 1994). In Asia, yhere 90 per cent of the yorld's rice is grown and consumed, nearly 2.8 million people derive 35-60 per cent of calories from rice. India has the largest area under rice, producing about 111 million tonnes of paddy/rough rice from over 42 m ha. The current average yield of milled rice in India is about 1.7 t/ha in contrast to nearly 5.5 t/ha in Australia, 5 t/ha in North Korea and Egypt, and around 4 t/ha in USA, South Korea, Japan, and China (Annonymous, 1994).
