The nutrient c:onsumpt ion in Himachal Pradesh (33720 tonnes in 1991-92) is quite low (Anonymous, 1992) as compared to other agriculturally progressive states of the country. The NPK ratio of the chemical ferti lizers being consumed in the state was 7.0 : 1.7 : 1.3 in 1991-92 (Anonymous, 1992> which i5 quite imbalanced as compared to the desired rat:io of 2 : 1 : 1 (Singh and Singh, 1992). The disproportionate hike (251.7 per cent in 1992-93 and 278.8 per cent in 1993-94 over 1991-92) in the prices of potash as a nutrient would still further accentuate imbalance in the nutrient ratios of the fertilizers being used in the state.
