Description |
Forests sustain a vast human population and are also store houses of mineral resources and genetic diversity. There has been a tremendous decrease in the forest area and this is attributed to demand of land for non forestry purposes such as agriculture, industrial development and housing. The forest loss causes disasters and calamities like floods, landslides, lowering of ground water table and drought. Year round fluctuating temperature and excess of precipitation combine to exacerbate decline of soil fertility and deforestation. Initiatives have been taken up towards tackling this complex problem and there is net increase in plantation activities both in temperate and tropical countries.
