Description |
The Himalayan forests are distinct from the forests situated in the plains of northern India. They are chiefly coniferous with sprinklings of broad-leaf associates. Within the Himalayas, the Western Himalayan flora is different from the eastern Himalayan flora due to variations in climatic conditions largely caused by latitudinal differences. Roughly speaking one third of the land is covered with trees and one third of these are conifers (Dewit, 1966). Family Pinaceae is the largest and most important of conifers. It is limited to the northern hemisphere mainly to its temperate and cold climatic zones.
