Description |
The pressing problem of today, besides providing adequate nutrition, is to combat the acute protein malnutrition of the exploding human population. Increasing production and consumption of protein rich legumes appear to be the most appropriate alternative to meet the situation. Among the legumes, garden pea (Pisum sativum Linn.), is not only rich in protein content (which ranges from 15.5 to 39.7%) but also has superior quality protein (Monti, 1983). Pea is also known to have appreciable amount of sugars, vitamins and minerals (Cherian et al., 1955). Besides, symbiotic association of peas with nitrogen fixing bacterium (Rhizobium leguminosarum) improves soil fertility by contributing nitrogen to the soil.
