Description |
Success of any tree breeding programme depends on: i) the existence of genetic variance in the trait of interest, and ii) the effectiveness of choosing parents for breeding. So long as heritable trait differences are present, gains can be achieved by simply limiting reproduction to appropriate parents (Namkoong et al. 1988). The ultimate source of genetic variation in a population is mutation, which is of two types: selective neutral and adaptive.
