Description Pungent peppers commonly known as chillies in India belong to the species Capsicum annuum L. which is the most widely cultivated species in the world. Chilli in India has become almost an essential article of diet of rich and poor. Its fruits are used for its pungency and for imparting pungent taste to various dietary preparations. The pungency is due to a crystalline volatile alkaloid called 'Capsaicin'.
