Description |
Apple is not only the backbone of the economy of the state of Himachal Pradesh but, also, of other sub-mountanous areas of the country. In hill regions of Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, apple was introduced by the Europeans in the nineteenth century. The commercial production in Himachal was given an impetus by Satya Nand Stokes, an American missionary turned Hindu, who introduced the Red Delicious apple from USA, alongwith American technology during the first quarter of this century and the crop quickly flourished in the bright sunshine and warm summers of North Indian Hills.
