Description |
Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) belongs to family Punicaceae which includes only one genus and three species, the other two being Punica protopunica aka Socratin plant and Punica nana aka ornamental tree (Evreinoff, 1949; Zukovskij, 1950; Moriguchi et al., 1987; Guarino et al., 1990; Jbir et al., 2008). It has been classified as the solitary genus under separate family due to the structure of the ovary and typical fruit type (Balusta). It is considered native to the region from Iran, Afghanistan and Baluchistan to the Himalayas in Northern India and has been naturalized over the whole Mediterranean regions and the Caucasus since ancient times.
