Description Alstroemeria L. commonly known as Lily of the Incas, is an important cut flower and potted plant on Dutch as well international trade and ranks among top ten cut flowers. It belongs to family Alstroemeriaceae. Since the introduction of alstroemeria cultivars for cut flower production in the early 1970's, growers have expressed interest in producing containerised alstroemeria. In the Netherlands, about 100 hectare is under its cultivation and in the rest of the world, it accounts for about 400 ha. The primary problem with the cut flower cultivars is the excessive stem elongation and high price of the plant material. In the late 1980's, several breeders began work on developing seed propagated alstroemeria cultivars which would be suitable for containerised production. Konst B. V. of Netherlands has been the pioneer breeding company in the world to introduce a series of successful dwarf alstroemeria cultivars belonging to Inca series like Inca Pulse, Inca Devotion, Inca Glow, Inca Serin, Inca Obsession, Inca Adore, Inca Exotica, Inca Tropic and Inca Ice, suitable for pot culture. Earlier dwarf cultivars include Rosalina and Dorotea.
