Onion (Allium cepa L.) is most important vegetable crop cultivated in many countries of the world. In India, it is grown in an area of 308.4 thousand hectares with 3348.8 thousand tonnes production of bulbs for local consumption as well as for export (The Fertilizer Association of India, 1992-93). The main onion growing states are Maharastra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Orissa, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh. In Maharastra and Gujarat, it is important cash rather than a vegetable crop due to its very high export potential.
