Land-use planning is fundamental to the sustainable use of our land and water resources getting degraded fast with their indiscriminate use at the hands of growing population. The large population pressure has brought about drastic reduction in the size of holdings in our country to a level of about 0.14 hectare compared to 0.5 hectare in 1951-52 (Sehgal, 1995). There are over 100 million land holdings with 124 million hectares under cultivation with a large proportion of them as non-sustainable (Virmani, 1994).
