Description |
Robinia pseudoacacia L. commonly known as black locust is a papilionaceous multipurpose tree legume. It is native to Soutll Eastern United States but has a world wide naturalized range (Harlow et al., 1979). In India, Robinia plantations were introduced around 1890 in the mid hill zone of North Western Himalayas (Troup, 1921) between an altitudinal range of 1000 to 3000 m (Muttho and Kango, 1965). The genus Robirlia embodies twenty species of which Robirzia pseudoacacia is the only economic tree globally adopted as a I nitrogen fixing multipurpose tree (Gombu, 1972). Currently black locust is one ofthe most widely planted broadleaf species in the world, equally ranked with Populus and second to Eucalyptus in total hectares established (Keresdesg 198 1). Among itsvaried uses, its utility as fuel wood, fodder with high crude protein, calcium and phosphorus (Brewbaker, 1986), soil conservation and anti-erosion properties are a few.
