Description |
Linseed/flax (Linum usitulissimum L.) is universally grown to produce seed for oil and fibre. It is generally termed as seed flax and fibre flax for its specific usage. The quality and utilization of linseed oil is determined by its fatty acid composition. In general, linseed oil has a high level of linolenic acid (35-66%) which imparts it the property of drying oil, suitable for manufacturing paints, stains, inks, varnishes and linoleum etc (Gill, 1987). Although, high levels of linolenic acid renders it unfit for consumption as edible oil due to undesirable odors and flavour reversion associated with the auto-oxidation (Green, 1986; Graef et al., 1988), yet 25 per cent of total linseed oil is consumed in our country for edible purpose. Mutation breeding in linseed has led to the development of edible flaxseed oil in which linolenic acid has been nearly eliminated (Green and Marshall, 1984).
