Description |
Nutrient requirement is basically, a genetic characteristic of the crop plants and this requirement may vary with the cultivars of the particular crop (Hazra and Som, 1999). Nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium are the three major plant nutrients, which are required by the plants in more quantities. Growth and yield gets restricted if any of these elements falls short. Balanced nutrition demands supply of all the essential elements. Vegetables being heavy feeders remove large amounts of macronutrients especially nitrogen. Nitrogen is one of the chief and important constituent of proteins and nucleicacid molecules that play the basic role in cell metabolism, growth, reproduction and transmission of heritable characters (Gupta, 1999). The deficiency of nitrogen results in slow and stunted growth with premature yellowing of lower leaves.
