Description |
The common cultivated pepper(Capsicum annuum L.) a member of the family Solanaceae, is a native of Mexico with a secondary centre of origin in Guatemala (Bukasov, 1930 and Smith and Heiser, 1957). Genus Capsicum includes many cultivated forms such as pungent peppers, paparikas, mild pickle types and bell shaped non-pungent "known as bell pepper or sweet pepper or ' Shimla Mirch1 in Northern India. Nutritionally bell pepper is very rich in vitamins A and C and contains about 150-180 mg per 100 g green fruit weight vitamin C which is higher than found in tomatoes, i.e. 20-25 mg per 100 g (Heiser and Smith, 1953).
