Description Phosphorus in soils occurs in many forms and performs limitless complex functions in plants such as cell division, fat and protein biosynthesis, formation of flowers, fruits and seeds, crop maturation, carbohydrate metabolism, root development vis-a-vis imparting strength to straw and prevention of lodging in cereal crops. It also acts as a precursor for phospholipids which are important in the formation of cell membranes besides being involved in the synthesis of genetically significant substances such as deoxyribose nucleic acid (DNA) and ribonucleic acid (RNA). Its role in the formation of high energy bonds in adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is well Known.
