Subject 633.18 Rice

Description About three-fourth of the world's rice acreage is grown under rainfed conditions, and optimum moisture supply is the most limiting factor in increasing rice yields. Though the increase in population is a global phenomenon, but the rate is much faster in tropical countries where rice is mainly grown and consumed. To keep pace with the increasing population, rice production should be increased substantially. There are three ways of achieving that goal: first, by increasing the area of land under cultivation; second, by increasing the production per unit area of land; third, by increasing production per unit time on the land available. There does not seem much scope of putting additional land under cultivation in the Asian tropics with the available resources and technology.
