Description |
Humans and forests have always coexisted since time immemorial. Rut the increasing human population has put a lot of pressure on forests. India with 15 per cent of world's population possesses about two per cent of the world's total forest area (Anonymous, 1986 a), spreading over 67 million ha. Forests are often understocked and more than half of these are unproductive. The remaining forests are being lost at a rate of 1.5 m ha yr on account of commercial requirements as well as biotic pressures. Recent satellite pictures have depicted that forest area is hardly 12 per cent (Vohra, 1988). The situation is very alarming as the 3 existing forests are capable of supplying only 25 million m of fuel 3 wood as against a projected demand figure of 300 million m for 1990.
