Among the common food crops of the world, rice forms the main food for more than half the human population. India alone constitutes one third of the total rice area and its output of rice amounts to about 31 percent of the total rice production of the world. In India, rice crop is grown in almost all parts of the country under diverse conditions ranging from almost sea-level to elevations of more than 6000 feet, from loam and clay to shallow laterites with soil reaction, ranging from extremely acidic to highly alkaline and, as such, the average yield of rice varies tremendously from one part of the country to the other.
