Description |
Maize is one of the important staple food crops grown in India and ranks fourth after rice, wheat snd sorghum from production point of view. In Himachal Pradesh, out of total cultivated area of 605.7 thousand hectares, this crop occupies 273.88 thousand hectares with a production of 457.99 thousand tonnes (Anonymous, 1980). The average yield of this crop per unit area in the state is 1582 kg/ha which is far lower as compared to that obtained at experimental stations (Singh at al., 1978). The main reasons for this are cultivation under rainfed conditions, non-adoption of improved practices on account of poor economic conditions of the cultivators and lack of suitable varities.
