Description |
Amongest many root and tuber crops used as human food in many countries, potato enjoys an unique distinction. It is the only non-cereal crop to be considered as a major food crop in the world. With only about half of the the total world production of 290 million tonnes of potato used for human consumption, the per capita per annum consumption in many countries is very high e.g. about 175 kg in Poland whereas, in most of the developing countries its consumption is quite low being 12 kg per annum in India.
