Description |
In recent years, agricultural sustainability has emerged as a worldwide issue largely because of the increasing reliance of the present-day agriculture on energyintensive chemical fertilizers and pesticides for enhancing crop production (Murata and Goh 1997). This has led to the problems in soil such as acidity, alkalinity and deterioration in soil quality, soil fertility, soil health, low biodiversity, environmental degradation, ground water contamination and pesticides residues in food products (Tilman et al. 2002). Therefore, the coupled effect of meeting food demand under limited arable area and production of toxin-free food has necessitated in adopting alternative agricultural practices like organic agriculture that are less dependent upon energyintensive technology and minimize the harmful effects that chemical fertilizers and pesticides pose on soil's physical, chemical and biological properties, environment and food quality (Pandey and Singh 2012).
