The Himalayas, both Eastern and Western, have for over a century been the happy hunting ground for lovers of beautiful flowers; some of the more ornamental plants have for long been adding beauty to the best garden.s of the West. In our country we are not yet sufficiently familiar with our showy Himalayan plants; nay, we do not seem to appreciate them as they deserve and as the western world has done, perhaps on the often heard plea that nothing that grows near at hand deserves a place in our gardens. It is our hope that the present book will call the attention of our flower-loving public to some of the finer plants from our country. The illustrations shown in this book have been selected from a large number of photographs taken by Dr. M. A. Rau, the Regional Botanist, and his colleagues of the Northern Circle, Botanical Survey of India, Dehradun. The arrangement in the book is alphabetical, according to the scientific names of the plants; both the illustrations and the details given in the text have been gathered in the field, and are therefore authentic and first-hand. |
