Description |
The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew with their herbarium, library, laboratories and unrivalled collection of living plants, form one of tlic world's most important centres ot botanical science. Their origins, however, can be traced back to a modest nine-acre site in the Pleasure Garden at Kew which Augusta, the Dowager Princess of Wales and mother of King George III, set aside for the cultivation of new and interesting plants. On this site were grown many of the exotic species which reached England for the first time during this period of mercantile and colonial expansion. Trees such as our oldest specimens ot Sophora japonica from China and Robinia pseudoacacia from America were planted for the Princess and still flourish at Kew, as do many accessions from Africa and Australia. |
