Description GSH, the so-called ‘master antioxidant’ is present in millimolar concentrations in the cells
and due to this high concentration as well as the alteration in its content and status under various
physiological conditions of the cells, numerous roles have been proposed as well as evidenced for
this molecule in living organisms. In planta, a significant role of GSH in the cross-communication
with other established signaling molecules to mitigate biotic stress (Fig. 1) has been proposed
(Ghanta and Chattopadhyay 2011). In this investigation, genetic engineering approach has been
used to develop transgenic Nicotiana tabacum with enhanced GSH content through the
overexpression of g-ECS exhibiting resistance to biotrophic pathogen Pseudomonas syringae pv.
tabaci. Further analysis of these transgenic lines at the transcript and protein levels have been
performed to unravel the dynamic complexicity of plant disease resistance mechanism with special
reference to the involvement of GSH in this process.
