Description Recent progress in antiviral research has been based mainly on targeting RNA molecules for therapeutic intervention.1–4 The diverse structures present in RNA molecules have become
specific drug recognition sites.5,6 The critical role played by RNA in life processes is signified by the recent discovery of micro-RNA.7–9 So, the development of molecules capable of controlling RNA activity is now being investigated for the progress of medicinal as well as chemico-biological research. In the past, the development of RNA binding molecules has been critically hindered due to the lack of high resolution conformational information and complex structural diversity of various RNA structures. As a result, in contrast to detailed studies of drug binding to DNA,10–17 studies on RNA binding were relatively scarce. The knowledge that various serious human diseases such as HIV, AIDS, hepatitis C etc. are caused
by RNA viruses also necessitates immediate research leading
to the design of new RNA binding compounds. However, for
RNA targeted drug design a detailed knowledge regarding the
modes and mechanisms of action of some existing compounds
is required.
