Description |
Granulocyte–macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GMCSF), a 23 000 molecular weight (MW) heavily glycosylated cytokine, is known to have growth-promoting activities on haematopoietic cell lineages. This cytokine was identified in lung-tissue-conditioned medium from lipopolysaccharide-injected mice, as a component showing stimulatory activity on the proliferation of mouse bone marrow cells in vitro, generating colonies of both granulocytes and macrophages.1 GM-CSF is known to stimulate multipotent progenitors depending on its concentration. 2 GM-CSF, in both humans and mice, was cloned from a complementary DNA library of activated T lymphocytes.3,4 Various subsets of T lymphocytes have been found to produce GM-CSF on activation, although its direct effect on the T lymphocytes is not yet clear. |
