Several groups of microorganisms have excellent ability to grow in such environmental condition(s) that is regarded as extreme for humans and majority of living beings. Some microbes could survive and grow at very high pH while others have the capability to grow at pH below 3 (Kushner, 1978; Herbert and Codd, 1986). Such extremely acidic pH regions are widely distributed in nature; some hot springs, coal mines, sulfidic mineral waste piles, sulfide mine soils and mine effluents are the examples. Many bacteria, which can survive below pH 4 but grow optimally around neutral pH, are described as acid-tolerant. More infrequent are those bacteria that propagate at pH values below 3 and are normally incapable to grow at neutral pH. The term acidophiles is strictly used for the microbes that grow optimally at pH values below 4. The first well-characterized acidophile is Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, previously known as Thiobacillus ferrooxidans or Ferrobacillus ferrooxidans. |
