Description |
Species belonging to the genus Leishmania are closely related to Trypanosomes and are grouped under Kinetoplastida, which also includes Crithidia, Leptomonas and other species. They are unicellular protozoan parasites of vertebrates, which are transmitted from host to host by the bite of Sand Fly vector. Species of Leishmania occur naturally in Lizards and mammals. Leishmania has a digenetic life cycle comprising of an extra cellular motile form named Promastigote residing in the gut of the insect vector and an intracellular sessile form Amastigote in mononuclear phagocytes of vertebrate host. There are at least 30 species of Leishmania of which more than a dozen infect man (1). Leishmaniasis is a spectrum of disease caused by Leishmania species manifested by consequences ranging from mild self-curing to severe fatal disease. Factors influencing the extent of infection and clinical manifestation are complex interaction resulting from parasitic invasiveness, tropism and pathogenicity and the genetically determined immune response of the host. According to a WHO/TDR report (2001), there are some twelve species of Leishmania, which causes leishmaniasis. |
