Description |
Arsenic is an environmental pollutant and a known human carcinogen. Globally, millions of people are at risk for the detrimental effects of chronic arsenic exposure with drinking water levels far exceeding the guideline of 10μg/L established by the World Health Organization (WHO). Exposure to arsenic-contaminated drinking water is alarmingly high in many countries, most notably India and Bangladesh, where >25 million people are chronically exposed to extreme arsenic levels. Premalignant skin lesions (melanosis, leucomelanosis, and keratosis) are an early manifestation and hallmark of arsenic toxicity and may indicate increased future risk of arsenic-related cancer. However, the molecular basis of arsenic-induced skin lesions and its progression to cancer is poorly understood and still elusive. |
