The results presented at a press conference in Washington were later published in the scientific journal Nature (Heidelberg et al., 2000) was of particular interest to the scientists around the world for two reasons, this was the first sequenced prokaryote with two chromosomes and also the sequenced genome was a significant breakthrough in microbiological research since the new information had implications for the production of better vaccines, diagnostics and treatments for the disease cholera, which have plagued human lives for more than 2,000 years. The symptoms of the disease were described in ancient Sanskrit writings and also by the Greek physician Hippocrates. For more than a century of study, Vibrio cholerae, the causative infectious agent of the severe diarrhoeal disease cholera, still presents surprises and challenges to the bacteriologists all over the world. |
