Description |
In nature, the interaction of microorganisms and minerals has been occurring since life appeared on earth due to interactions among the atmosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere and lithosphere (Trudinger et al., 1980). In course of time, such interactions developed and selected specific living forms for ambient and extraordinary environments and niches on the earth. The presence of sulfuric acid in the coal mine drainages and of iron and copper in the effluents of copper mines were, however, considered to be solely due to chemical reactions until 1922 when bacterial leaching of zinc and iron sulfides were first reported (Torma and Banhegyi, 1984). Those studies were involved some unidentified autotrophic bacteria and did not receive due recognition. After more than two decades, the impact of bacteria in leaching of metals from mineral deposits was first realized when the isolation of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, previously known as Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, (Kelly and Wood, 2000) from coal mine drainage and study of its properties first revealed the involvement of this bacterium in the acid generation and leaching of ores (Colmer and Hinkel, 1947; Colmer et al., 1950; Temple and Colmer, 1951; Brierley 1978). This phenomenon is now being exploited commercially by the mining and metal processing industries (Ehrlich and Brierley, 1990; Rawlings and Silver 1995). |
