Description Helicobacter pylori has been implicated in the pathogenesis of most important gastroduodenal diseases, such as gastritis, peptic ulcer, gastric carcinoma and has been defined as a Class I carcinogen (Moller et al., 1995). H. pylori can be subclassified into ‘cag’ pathogenicity
island (cagPAI)-positive and cagPAI-negative strains based on the presence or absence of cagPAI, a 40-kb genome fragment containing 31 genes (Tomb et al., 1997). There is enormous heterogeneity in the consequences of H. pylori infection, however more severe disease manifestations have been attributed to infection by cagPAI-positive isolates (Blaser et al., 1998). Currently, the most preferred H. pylori eradication therapy employ, one proton pump
inhibitor (e.g. omeprazole) and two antibiotics (e.g. trinidazole and amoxicillin or clarithromycin)
(Bytzer et al., 2005). However, such multiple therapy regiments have not been very successful in clinical practice, since the overuse or rather misuse of antibacterial agents have resulted in the emergence of antibiotic-resistant strains, the main cause of treatment
failure along with adverse side effects in some cases (Bytzer et al., 2005 and Cameron et al., 2004). Increasing complications in the conventional triple-therapies stimulate an urgent need to develop new non-antibiotic antibacterial agents for H. pylori infection that
are highly effective, safe and have novel drug targets.
