Description |
Thyroid hormones are key regulators of metabolism and development and are known to have pleiotropic effects on many different organs. There has been an increasing understanding of the thyroid hormone (TH) action on brain and clinical implications of TH dysfunction. The present work is another such effort to explicate the role of TH in maintaining the glutathione homeostasis in the developing brain with particular focus on the astrocytes. With a view to establish a valid foundation of the work presented in this thesis and to understand the rationale of the study, present understanding of the developing brain, the importance of TH in brain development, the importance of the astrocytes in the utilization of the TH by the brain, role of the astrocytes in the brain function especially in relation to its interaction with the neurons and the known effects of the TH on the astrocytes themselves were considered worth reviewing. |
