Description |
The scientific research concerning lipopolysaccharides, lipooligosaccharides, oligosaccharides and glycoconjugates etc. have gained momentum and is developing rapidly in a most exciting manner during the past decade. Glycoconjugates represent an important class of compounds that carry significant biological information and are responsible for various biological recognition processes, virulence factors, immunity etc. The thesis entitled ‘Syntheses of Biologically Active Oligosaccharides and Carbohydrate Based Aza-heterocycles’ includes the synthesis of a unique mannopentasaccharie having a specific linkage pattern which can bind with the two binding domains of a lectin isolated from Musa paradisiaca (banana). The extensive use of aza-heterocyclic compounds in the pharmaceutical industry is attributed to the significant biological activity of these molecules. However, their use becomes limited due to low solubility in water. Thus synthesis of water-soluble azaheterocyclic compounds, having biological activity in a highly efficient and cost-effective manner is a great challenge. Carbohydrate based aza-derivatives can be a suitable alternative. |
