Description A field experiment was conducted during Rabi season of 2011-12 at Agronomy Research Area
of KVK, Jind to evaluate the efficacy of imazethapyr against weeds in fenugreek. All the weed control
treatments effectively controlled the weeds and gave significantly higher grain yield over weedy check.
With post-emergence use of imazethapyr at 55 g ha-1 stunting of crop growth was observed which
recovered within 15 days after treatment without any yield penality. Post-emergence application of
imazethapyr at 55 g ha-1 provided excellent control of all weeds over its application either as pre-plant
incorporation or pre-emergence. The three rates of imazethapyr (35, 45 and 55 g ha-1) when applied as
PPI were found equally effective to its pre-emergence application at respective doses in controlling
weeds of fenugreek. Trifluralin and pendimethalin both at 1.0 kg ha-1 also proved very effective in
controlling the weeds up to 50 days after sowing. Maximum grain yield (1552 kg ha-1) of fenugreek
was obtained when two hoeings at 25 and 50 days after sowing were employed which was at par with
post-emergence application of imazethapyr at 55 g ha-1. Maximum net returns (Rs. 9712 ha-1) and
benefit-cost ratio (1.99) was obtained with use of pendimethalin which was closely followed by postemergence
application of imazethapyr at 55 g ha-1. Under post-emergence situation, post-emergence
application of imazethapyr at 55 g ha-1 can be used as an alternative to two hand hoeing.
